I'd like to know what plants/berries make the best base for an organic primitive stain or paint?

I just got through carving my first kpanlogo drum (and it came out nicely might I add) and instead of trying to carve some elaborate pattern on my rough draft, I want to paint it with a real primitive kind of stain or 'paint'... I'm not sure what kind of leaves, berries, or soil/clay make the best, most lasting stain...I'd like to know what plants/berries make the best base for an organic primitive stain or paint?
How 'bout walnut? Use the husk covering the shell...ask anyone who has ever handled them.

Blackberries?

Linseed oil has been used for eons for protection %26amp; to enhance the grain of the wood.I'd like to know what plants/berries make the best base for an organic primitive stain or paint?
The Ancients used Red Ochre - I've found it in the wild, fun stuff.

Several colors can be derived from different plant materials - poke weed berries come to mind:
