What do you use to protect your carpet from paint stains?

What do you use to protect your carpet from paint stains---be it acrylics, pastels, watercolors, oils? Do you use cloth, newspapers, what?

Moms, what do you do for your kids to protect your carpet from crayons or generic watercolor sets? What do you use to protect your carpet from paint stains?
Thin plastic drop cloths are cheap. As far as the kids, don't allow items they can ruin the carpet with to be used in that room. What do you use to protect your carpet from paint stains?
You need to use plastic drop cloths for paint protection. Newspaper or cloth won't prevent the paint spills from soaking through to the carpet. Use the dining room or any other uncarpeted area to protect from crayons or water colors.
Paint your best bet is drop clothes. Sorry unless you are a miracle worker dry paint stains will not come out of carpet.

As for your kids spray the carpet with scotchguard and get your carpets cleaned regularly
I use old sheets. If I get a really bad spill of paint, I avoid stepping in that area, of course. :)
Drop cloths when painting.

My children weren't allowed to use crayons or watercolor sets on the floor; they sat at a table.
