try paint thinner but only a little cause you don't want to do more damage.

You could try a stain remover but in my experience paint will not come out. If it hasn't washed out yet, you say it's an old stain, I doubt it will.
Wet a cloth and soak it in turpentine. Wipe stain and after it soaks in, wash in warm soapy water. Good luck.
