i had a leak through a ceiling and now there is a brown water mark on the ceiling, the original paint is white emulsion. Can i paint straight over the stain with more white emulsion of will the stain come through, in which case what is the best thing to do? ThanksCan i paint on top of a water stain?
You can use any oil based primer/sealer to cover the stain. I'm assuming the ceiling is white, as are most primers. BIN is excellent, however there are a very large range of ';damp sealers'; on the market. Any DIY shop/supercentre will have a selection. BIN tends to be slightly more expensive and those of us in the trade use the better products (well, I'd hope so!), but for your own domestic use, maybe Polycell would be good. Use a mini sponge roller to apply the primer/sealer. Brush strokes can show through when you roller over them with emulsion, so the mini roller application will blend better. You might need 2 coats, but the primer/sealer dries fairly quickly. Then you'll need to paint the ceiling with emulsion I'm afraid, as the primer/sealer will have a different tone and finish to the existing emulsion. For speed, use a ';One Coat'; emulsion, again you can pick this up at any DIY store.
Make sure that when you're painting your ceiling at any point, cover whatever is below with an old sheet or dust sheet if you have one. Wash off any paint from your hands fairly quickly as the primers can be fairly toxic. But see the instructions on the tins if you're unsure.
Best of luck. Can i paint on top of a water stain?
you will have to use a good primer but make sure it is one that will cover water stains and keep it from bleeding through...the bad news is prb the paint color won't match because of dirt, dust, etc on the rest of the ceiling. try getting a paint that will closer match the old paint unless you want to paint the whole ceiling
No the stain will come through again.
You should put a stain block paint over the top first. A friend of mine said put gloss paint over it then emulsion but i've never tried it.
Kilz is the only way to go. I've used it for years and have never had a reason to use anything else. Evidently there are some painters with experience out there as you got so many responses on using Kilz.
when it comes to water stains you need to use a oil based primer then repaint with oil or latex..... water based will not cover that water stain...there are great products on the market in spray bombs for ceilings....
There are two brand name primers designed to solve the bleed-through problem. They are ';Bin'; and ';Kilz';. Other products may exist, but these are what most painters use. Kilz also offers a newer version, ';Kilz II,'; which is water based. This product works great. The cleab-up is so much easier, and the protection is the same.
use under coat first
Paint over it with gloss, then repaint with matt. The gloss will stop the stain coming through. Done it.
If you prime it first, it will cover, try pva mixed with water
Ever heard of the product called ';Kilz';? It's a primer that covers all sorts of nasty little things and works much better than plain primer on dark paint. It will cover the water stain so that you can repaint the ceiling.
The stain will come through very quickly. Spray on or brush on KILZ. It is the only thing that will work. Follow instructions and it will be fine. I have used it for years.
use oil based primer/undercoat., then cover with your final finish.
paint over with stain blocker then overpaint as normal
